Rejoice for your reward is great in Heaven

Jesus told the disciples returning from a successful mission, “Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

When we were still young kids we were easily satisfied with simple things like candies. As we grow up, we become more sophisticated and won’t be happy until we get the manager’s post, an expensive i-phone, or simply be rich with more money.

The disciples were overjoyed upon returning from their first mission because they were able to exorcise demons. But Jesus corrected them saying they must be glad for a higher and more noble reason like being assured of a place in heaven. “Rejoice and be glad because your names are written in heaven,” Jesus said. Luke 10:20

The same is said in the first reading where we heard Isaiah saying “Your heart will rejoice because the Lord will bring you peace. God will comfort you.’ Isa. 66:10-14 Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, … Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts!… as a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.  When you see this, your heart shall rejoice.” Indeed, comfort and peace coming from the Lord is best for us above all else.

Thus, In the responsorial Psalm we are exhorted to say “Let the earth cry out to God with joy!”

Check where the source of your happiness is. Does it come from the Lord and not from anything less?

St. Paul as our model to follow says that he always rejoiced in Christ surprisingly even in the Lord’s suffering, from which spring true and lasting peace. “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, … Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule.” Gal. 6:14-18
