What they are now you will later be!
Jesus said to the crowds:
“Everything that the Father gives me will come to me,
and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will
but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me,
that I should not lose anything of what he gave me,
but that I should raise it on the last day.”
John 6:37-40
ALL SOULS
A housemaid serving a family for many years got very sick. Since she was not getting out of the hospital soon, the family decided to replace her but assured her of paying all her hospital bills including her separation pay. As soon as she got out, she immediately went to church and offered mass for the souls in purgatory as she was wont to. But this time was different. She offered mass specifically for one soul who needed only one more mass to enter heaven. Then she wandered in the city not knowing where to go next till she met a young man who told her, “If you’re looking for a job as housemaid, go to that house.” Forgetting to thank the youth, she quickly went to that house. After knocking at the gate an old lady came out carrying a sign that read ‘Wanted housemaid’. The old lady let her in albeit surprised that she arrived even before she had put out the sign. After agreeing on many things about her job, she stood up and saw on the wall the photo of the old lady’s son. She then told the old lady that the young man in the photo was the one who led her to the house. But the old lady gasped, “That is impossible because my son died ten years ago!” It turned out that the son was the soul she offered the mass for that day which enabled the son to enter finally heaven.
We believe in the communion of saints. We pray that the souls of our faithful departed in purgatory may soon enjoy heaven’s bliss. We help them for they cannot anymore help themselves. Yet they can intercede for us even in doing our material tasks here on earth – much like the saints who are already in heaven.
The number of saints in heaven are more than those recognized by the Church. Some of them maybe our own relatives long been purified since they left us. Some many not even be catholics – even atheists who have always helped those in need.
Instead of ghouls and monsters let us celebrate then this great unity among all of us in heaven, on earth and in purgatory.
