Double Grand Slam

Memorial of St Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, 5 Feb 2026, DBPH Chapel, Talamban

Today we honor and celebrate a young lady by the name of Agatha, known to be one of the most highly venerated virgins in early Christian antiquity.

Legend holds that at the age of 15, Agatha already made a vow of virginity for Christ’s sake. But no sooner than expected, the Roman Prefect Quintianus got so charmed by her beauty and nobility that he started pursuing her, determined as he was to marry her. She on her part, because of her unwavering love for Christ, kept rejecting his amorous advances and proposals. She managed to overcome even his attempts to rape her.

When her Christian faith was discovered, the Prefect had Agatha arrested, imprisoned and tortured in the hope that she would finally give in to his demands. But Agatha became ever more determined to remain faithful to her divine Spouse, offering all her bitter sufferings to God. She kept on praying for strength to be able to hold on until the end as the tortures inflicted on her became even more cruel and unbearable. She never gave up when even her breasts were ordered to be cut off.

She eventually died in prison around the year 251. She was only about 20 years old when she won the double “Grand Slam” of virginity and martyrdom, not in Tennis but in real life. Today the Church continues to honor her amazing triumph and devoutly invokes her as the patron saint of rape victims and breast cancer patients. Christian art depicts her as a beautiful woman holding a tray with both of her breasts on it.

Let us, therefore, take some time today to pray for rape victims and breast cancer patients especially those whom we know, that they may experience God’s healing grace through the intercession of St Agatha.

We pray also for ourselves, and for those persecuted for their faith or unfairly treated for the good work they do so that, despite the trials we face, we may faithfully and lovingly all hold on to Christ, our Lord, until the end. GiGsss!
