Jesus took Peter, James and John to lead them up a high mountain and he was transfigured before them. Mt 17:1-19

Jesus is fond of mountain climbing. He hiked up at least four mountains in the bible. He went up Mt. Calvary to die. He ascended back to the Father on Mt. Olives. He was transfigured on Mt. Tabor. He preached his sermon on the mountain.
There was only one purpose why Jesus would go up a mountain – to pray. Why up there? Up the high mountain, He felt nearer to God in the heavens. Up the high mountain He is also farther away from earth’s distractions.
And how did Jesus pray – He listened to the Father – the same advice the Father gave the three apostles “…listen to Him”.
But as beautiful as the transfiguration might be, Jesus brought His apostles back down to the plain. If only to bring to reality their encounter of Jesus’ divinity.
This Sunday we are encouraged to pray by listening to Jesus. But prayer happens not only in the high mountain peaks. It must also be experienced especially in the ordinary plains of life.
