Post Tino Clean-up
Reflection on Wednesday, 31st Week in OT; 5 Nov 2025, DBPH Chapel

We gather this morning to worship a God who is all-powerful. As Fr Mario was telling us last night, the Lord has been kind to us for having made us survive typhoon Tino. For the first time we have experienced flooding all over our compound so high that the muddy waters have entered even our offices, lobby, dining area and the entire first floor. But by God’s mercy and grace, we are still safe. Sa kaluoy sa Ginoo luwas gihapon kitang tanan. (Sumakit lang ang balakang dahil sa buong araw kahapon na pagtanggal ng lahat ng tubig at paglilinis ng sahig.)
However, after seeing the photos and footages in social media these past few hours, we cannot but be moved and even cry. Still fresh from a devastating earthquake, our people had to suffer again the wrath of another powerful force of nature. How can we not be deeply affected by the 48 reported casualties (as of 6:00 this morning), along with countless houses and cars swept by the raging waters. We are therefore here not only to thank the Lord for the calm after the storm, the lives he has spared, and the people who have been rescued, but most importantly to pray for those who could not be saved, those who have lost their lives, their loved ones, their homes and their livelihood.
Our cry of lamentation as a nation continues – if only government officials and those in civil service have used the full amount of the taxpayers’ money to implement and bring to completion the flood control projects worth billions and trillions, many lives, many homes, many infrastructures could have been saved.
As we remember our beloved dead and gradually approach the end of the liturgical year we are also reminded of our own death, which marks the end of our earthly life. But the good news for us is that our life does not end in death. Our daily liturgy reaffirms Jesus’ invitation for us to come to the heavenly banquet prepared by God not in this world but beyond.
We pray, therefore, that the Eucharist we celebrate today may inspire us to live holy and selfless lives, full of love. May our Holy Communion empower us to persevere with great determination to walk with Jesus every single day despite the trials and calamities that come, always ready to share our resources and offer help to anyone in need along the way. GiGsss!
