SYM-Philippines South Province Gathered as One to Celebrate IDBYC 2022

by: Ferdie Cogal, DB Liloan

Gathered as one community of young disciples, young people from different Salesian houses gathered physically and virtually for the Inter Don Bosco Youth Clubs 2022. This happened last December 17 at Don Bosco Technical College Cebu-New Gym in Punta Princesa, Cebu City for Cebu District. While other Salesian Youth from Negros District and Mindanao District joined virtually through Zoom.

This year’s IDBYC was meaningful as it is the very first physical gathering after 2 years of hiatus due to pandemic and first of its kind being in hybrid setup with other participants from far Salesian houses. It centered on the theme, “Mary arose and went with haste.”(Luke 1:39) This has challenged the young people that like Mary, we should say “Yes” to God’s mission despite all the confusions and challenging times.

As participants arrived at the venue, they were welcomed with smiles and a spirit of camaraderie from the organizers and co-participants. They were then grouped according to youth groups that they are part of and was followed by a parade. The parade was filled with youthful energy and festive spirit from everyone. After the parade, IDBYC 2022 formally started with the opening prayer and the host acknowledged the different DB houses that were present physically and virtually. It was filled with claps and cheers as young people were proud to represent their houses.

As per tradition, inputs were essential part of the gathering. First input was delivered by Mr. Eduardo Empelis Jr., the former senior youth leader. It centered on the Federation of National Youth Organization (FNYO) and the Family of United and Empowered Leaders (FUEL). He highlighted that on the bigger scale of youth ministry in the country SYM is part and member of FNYO. On the other hand at the archdiocesan level we are part of FUEL. After the first input, it was followed by the talk of Mr. Ike Abastillas, a Salesian Cooperator. His discussion centered on Mary’s simplicity and obedience, answering “YES” to God’s mission without hesitation.

The other half of the day for the afternoon session, an orientation was given to youth group members. The orientation was about the nature of the youth groups and activities they can work on. Simultaneously, Election of Provincial Animators per sodality and youth group was also done. Part of the activities was the service of young people as they clean within the premises of the venue. A fellowship where talents of young people are shared also followed.

As the activity came to its end, a Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr. Vince Michael Sabal, SDB. The induction of the new Provincial Animators and Secretaries was also held.  It was followed by giving of certificates to the participants and DB houses.

Indeed like Mary, young people are challenged to reflect and learn by her obedience and example. The youth are called to mission in the community through service in the spirit of synodality.
