Reflection on Wednesday, 29th Week in O.T., 25 Oct 2023
In five days’ time we will be having our Barangay elections here in our country. And so, candidates, running for various posts and positions in the local government, have reached the peak and last leg of their campaign, many or some of them resorting to vote buying strategies to make sure they get to be elected by the people.
On the other hand we should not put aside the fact that three days after the elections we shall also be celebrating All Souls Day. It is as though we, candidates and voters alike, are being reminded of the probable nearness of death. When that day comes we shall have to face the just Judge and give a full account of everything we have said and done, and how we tried to live as his beloved servants here on earth. Coincidentally, in fact, the Gospel passage we just heard today reminds us that the Son of Man will come when we least expect him.
While all of us here have received the divine gift of becoming God’s adopted children through the cleansing waters of Baptism, and therefore, we are no longer slaves of sin, we, nevertheless, remain his humble servants striving to be obedient to him and always occupied in doing the Father’s will. Even St Paul in his letter to the Romans is reminding us today not to let sin rule our mortal bodies, but instead offer our bodies to God as weapons for justice, and as instruments of his love and grace.
Hence in this Holy Mass, let us truly offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, our spiritual worship. And we pray that this intimate encounter with the Lord may empower us to work not for our own selfish agenda but always in accord with God’s will for the building up of the Church as well as for the peace and prosperity of our respective families, communities & nations.
