5th Easter Sunday
Departure is always sad. And yet it something unavoidable. At one point in life everyone would depart. Not only in death but many times in life people move on to new places. Children leave their ancestral homes when they get married. Students leave their beloved school upon graduating. Filipinos have often migrated to foreign land for a better life.
Jesus in today’s gospel bade His disciples goodbye during the Last Supper. Soon He would ascend back to His Father. The disciples were much distressed and have asked Him where He was going.
But Jesus advised them not to be troubled. To calm their fears Jesus assured them that He would prepare a place for all of them in His Father’s House where He was returning.
His disciples asked Him how to reach His Father’s house. Jesus answered: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” One only needed to follow Him to reach the Father’s house. One need to put into practice His teachings and live life the way He showed.
But Jesus’ Way is never easy. He was the corner stone of God’s Temple and yet he was rejected by the builders 1 Pt 2:4-9.
Christians like us who follow Him would also be denied. In following Him we would also suffer and take the way of the cross. Our life would be no different from the likes of Stephen with his companion deacons and the rest of the first Christians Acts 6:1-7.
But Heaven awaits those who are faithful. Don Bosco used to tell people to walk on earth with eyes fixed on paradise. This is the secret to persevere through life’s trouble.
