Charity Not Laws

‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life” Mt 25:31-46

34th Sunday Ordinary Time CHRIST KING Cycle A

When the rich young man asked Jesus how to enter heaven, Jesus told him to obey the ten commandments. But the youth answered that he already did all that. Jesus then lovingly told him to sell all he had and give the money to the needy. That was still lacking in him. Sadly, he departed. Jesus was disappointed.

Today as we celebrate the end of the world or of the liturgical year, we are told of the Parable of the Last Judgment. Only those who did charity to the least could enter life eternal.

Shall we be counted among those who didn’t see the LORD in their poor brethren and said , “LORD when did we see you hungry, naked, homeless, sick or incarcerated?” Are shall we be blinded by our legalistic fulfillment of the commandments that actually tells us to do nothing to others?
