Isaiah today tells the sad story of a disappointing vineyard. After the owner labored so much to have the best vineyard, the grapes he got at harvest were all but sour. Is 5:1-7

Sometimes the seeds that a farmer sows may disappoint him yielding but a poor crop. But more than plants, humans could be far more disappointing to others and even to God. Unlike plants, we could lie to people who trust us. Friends could betray us. Partners could cheat on each other.

Such is the other sad story in the gospel this Sunday. The story of the wicked tenants who refused the owner his share of the grapes; who harmed the servants he had sent; who in the end murdered his son alluded to what the Jews did to the prophets in the past. It also hinted at what they would do to Jesus in the end crucifying Him on Calvary.

Although we responded after the First Reading that “The vineyard of the Lord is the House of Israel” Ps 80:9, 12, 13-14, 15-16, 19-20. At present, we are the House of Israel. Today we are God’s vineyard. The disappointing sad story in the gospel of today could be very well our own story of how we many times have rejected God today.

St. Paul thus advises us to think and do only “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious” so that at last the God of peace will be with us. Phil 4:6-9
