Are We There Yet?

When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Mt 11:2-11

3rd SUNDAY of ADVENT Cycle A

For Christmas people buy many things. Besides gifts, many must buy food needed for Noche Buena. And the line for the cashier can be very long, testing each buyer’s patience. More than anything else we need a lot of patience on Christmas.

Patience comes from the Latin word “patior” which curiously means to suffer. As patients are those who suffer in the hospitals, people buying anything for Christmas also suffer. Says the person who needed patience: “God give me patience and I want it right now!”

We already finished 14 days of Advent and we still have14 days to go. This day is called “Gaudete” Sunday because the readings tell us to rejoice. Therefore we switch colors from violet to rose to remind us of that. Rejoice the Lord is near or rather be patient we are almost there!

John Baptist was imprisoned and inside there he got impatient. He sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Messiah for if He was not they will have to look for another. Jesus answered: “Patience! Look at what is happening. First the good news is preached to the people. Second all the sick are getting healed.” Jesus was already fulfilling what Isaiah just prophesied when he said “The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song.Is 35:1-6a, 10

James in the second reading similarly wrote: “Be patient. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” Jas 5:7-10
