Brother Zatti, a Nurse & a Pharmacist

Canonized a Saint Today, 9 Oct 2022

Today at 4pm Phil. time (10am Rome time) Salesian Brother Artemide Zatti, a nurse & pharmacist by profession, will be canonized a saint by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square along with another holy man named Giovanni Battista Scalabrini.

As a young man Zatti used to work in a hotel, then later, in a brick factory.  He also served actively in their parish, accompanying the priests in visiting the sick. At 19 years old in the year 1900 he joined the Salesians in Viedma, Argentina, and dedicated his life working for the poor and marginalized youth esp. those needing medical attention. In 1911, he was put in charge of the pharmacy and the hospital run by the Salesians, and followed the principle “he who has little, pays little. and he who has nothing pays nothing.”

More interestingly his extraordinarily holy life was confirmed by the miraculous healing in August 2016 of a Filipino patient suffering from right cerebellar ischemic stroke complicated by a voluminous hemorrhagic lesion. That patient was the brother of my batchmate Bro Roberto “Obet” Narvaez, SDB. This amazing miracle led to the Vatican approval of his canonization today.
