DBYC-Lawaan Encounter with Canadian Visitors

On March 17, 2024, the Don Bosco Youth Centre-Lawaan welcomed Canadian students with open arms, fostering a beautiful exchange of culture, friendship, and joy. 

The morning started with an exciting introduction to Filipino cultural dances, such as the Banga, Maglalatik, and Sinulog dances. Under the guidance of the committed leaders of DBYC-LA, the Canadian students enthusiastically embraced the chance to experience a little bit of Filipino culture as they learned the intricate rhythm and moves of these cultural dancees.

The official program started at 1:00 p.m. and was hosted by two emcees, Juvanil Alvarado and Louella Pacada. Bro. Vanjo Gila, SDB, delivered the opening remarks wherein he welcomed the Canadians and introduced the DBYC-Lawaan to them. Additionally, he provided some glimpses into Philippine traditions and culture. Followed by an energetic and lively opening salvo and unfreezers, laughter and joy filled the air as Canadian students and Salesian youth joined together in lively dance routines. Barriers were broken and friendships were created.

A ‘Getting to Know You’ activity followed with a ‘Bahay-Bata-Bagyo’ game as participants exchanged names and stories, fostering fun, interactive, and deeper connections between the two groups. Everyone had the chance to share their expectations for the program and reflect on the meaningful interactions of the day during an immediate Q&A session.

The cultural dance performances, which showcased the talent and enthusiasm of both Canadian students and Filipino youth, were definitely the event’s main highlights. The audience were impressed with the amazing and outstanding performance of the Banga, Maglalatik and Sinulog dances which were performed by both Canadian students and Filipino youth and were led by dedicated leaders of DBYC-Lawaan. The Canadian students showed a heartfelt gesture of reciprocity and deepened their connection with the Filipino youth by preparing their own dance and song performances for their Filipino friends. Their sincere efforts were received with loud cheers and appreciation.

Fr. Vince Michael Sabal, SDB, delivered an inspiring afternoon talk that highlighted a timeless saying of St. John Bosco: “Run, jump, play, make noise, but do not sin.”  His words resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of living life fully and joyfully while maintaining moral integrity.

The program concluded with a spirited community dance and fun-filled Filipino games, where Canadian students enthusiastically embraced traditional pastimes alongside their Filipino friends.  The air was filled with laughter and connection, symbolizing lasting connections formed throughout a day of celebration and mutual learning.
