People and not Fish

“Follow me and I will make you fish for people – not anymore fish.“

 Mark 1:14-20

3rd SUN ORDINARY TIME

A Chinese proverb goes “Give man a fish and he will eat for one day. Teach a man how to fish and he will eat for life.” Obviously a for life is better than for one day. So we should choose to learn how to fish ourselves rather than just receive a fish from others.

Somehow Jesus told the same thing to His apostles at the first time He called them to join His band. From the very beginning He set straight for them their goal: to fish people not merely fish as they were used to. The reason is simple: people are more important than fish. Saving souls is their top priority before feeding their hunger.

Although they are not prevented from doing that too! In fact, when they can, they must as Jesus did when after preaching to the 5,000 He fed them.

In short going after top priority does not mean neglecting other minor goals. Even minor goals somehow contribute something to attaining the top priority.
