DBYC Lourdes Holds Fundamentals of Photography Workshop

by: DBYC Lourdes Communications Team

On August 6, 2026, young people from the DBYC Lourdes Youth Center, together with members of the Salesian Youth Media Team – FIS, participated in a Fundamentals of Photography Workshop led by Mr. Michael “Des” Ramos, a DBYC Lourdes alumnus and now a professional photographer based in Manila.

The workshop was held at the invitation of Rev. Fr. Keith J. Amodia, SDB, to help the young people learn the basics of photography and discover how photos can be used to tell meaningful stories.

Kuya Michael introduced the basic principles of photography through the Exposure Triangle: ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed. He explained how these three elements work together to create a well-exposed photograph. He also discussed how aperture affects the appearance of a photo, how shutter speed determines how long the camera captures an image, and how ISO helps the camera capture photos under different lighting conditions.

One of the lessons that truly stayed with the participants was his reminder:

“In photography, there are two sides of the story: the photo and the caption.”

Learning did not stop after the discussion. The participants went on a short photo walk, where they had the opportunity to practice what they had learned. They explored different photography techniques, including the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Frame Within a Frame, Point of View, and Light as the Subject.

After the photo walk, everyone gathered to showcase their favorite photos, share the stories behind them, and explain how they applied the different techniques. It was inspiring to see how each photo reflected a different perspective and told its own story.

The activity reminded everyone that photography is more than just taking pictures. It is about seeing things from different perspectives, noticing the beauty around us, and telling stories that sometimes cannot be expressed through words alone.

The workshop also gave the young people and members of the Salesian Youth Media Team – FIS an opportunity to strengthen their photography skills and learn more about visual storytelling. By putting what they learned into practice, the participants experienced how simple photography techniques can transform an ordinary moment into a meaningful photograph.

The DBYC Lourdes community sincerely thanks Mr. Michael “Des” Ramos for sharing his time, knowledge, experience, and passion for photography with the young people. His insights and encouragement have inspired many aspiring photographers to continue learning, creating, and appreciating the beauty in every moment.

May this workshop be the beginning of a journey for more young storytellers who will use their talents and creativity to capture moments, tell stories, and inspire others.
