Reversal of fate

“That is how these people persecuted the prophets who lived before you.”

 Matthew 5:1-12a

31st SUN ORDINARY TIME/ALL SAINTS DAY

On this Solemnity of All Saints, St. Matthew gives us from the sermon on the mount the 8 beatitudes as the way to join the company of the blessed in heaven. In his gospel instead, Luke in the sermon on the plain gives us 4 blessings and 4 curses. Despite the differences there is one great similarity between Matthew’s or Luke’s beatitudes. Both Matthew and Luke speak to us of a reversal of fortunes for man as he passes from earth to heaven. If we are lucky now at our present life on earth, later on in the next life we will be unlucky and vice versa.

But what is important is the reason that both Matthew and Luke give to explain why there is this reversal: it is in BEING TRUE PROPHETS and in BEING FALSE PROPHETS. The people always persecuted the true prophets on earth as much as they had followed false prophets.

Be wary then that we always speak true on behalf of God.
